Contrast and Readability in Image Design
Contrast is the difference between two elements. In design, it's the most powerful tool for creating readability and visual interest.
Value Contrast
This is the difference between light and dark. For maximum readability, place very light text on a very dark background, or vice versa. Avoid "middle" values that blend together.
Color Contrast
Complementary colors (like orange and blue) provide high visual contrast and vibration. This makes elements practically jump off the screen.
The Squint Test
If you squint your eyes at your thumbnail and you can't tell what the main subject or word is, you don't have enough contrast. Re-evaluate your colors and backgrounds.
Using Outlines and Shadows
When an image has a complex background, simple text often fails. Use a black outline (stroke) or a strong drop shadow to create artificial contrast between the text and the background image.
