Instagram Reels Thumbnail Tips
Reels are the gateway to new followers on Instagram. While the video is the main event, the thumbnail (cover) is what motivates the initial click from the grid.
1. The "Feed vs. Grid" Problem
A Reels cover is 9:16 (vertical), but on your profile grid, it is cropped to a 1:1 square. Always ensure the most important elements (faces and text) are in the center square area of your 9:16 vertical design.
2. Clear Topic Messaging
Don't make people guess what the Reel is about. Use 1-3 bold words that explain the value or the "hook" of the video. Example: "3 FREE APPS" or "AVOID THIS!"
3. Professional Polish
Reels with custom, designed covers often perform better because they look authoritative. A random frame from the video is often blurry or awkward. Take a dedicated photo for your Reels cover.
4. High Vibrancy and Sharpness
The Instagram Explore page is highly competitive. Use our editor's sharpening and saturation tools to make your cover stand out in a sea of other vertical content.
